How We Help

In the game of life, someone will come alongside your son and influence him for better or worse, and perhaps a group of his peers or older acquaintances will sway him as well.

FATHERS DON’T NEED TO STAND ON THE SIDELINES – THEIR SONS WILL APPRECIATE HAVING THEM IN THE HUDDLE.

Not to bark commands and point out his mistakes.  And certainly not to carry the ball for him.  Under the right conditions, a son will welcome his father’s advice about what to expect next, how to succeed, and the way out of tough spots.  If you have a relationship with him, he’ll listen.

Especially if he can see that your own faith walk is authentic, and that it is shared by other men and families whom he has come to know and love and respect.

FAST is all about fathers and sons growing up together.  Not the kind of physical growth that “just happens” from one year to the next, but the spiritual growth that occurs in people that seek God.  Spiritual growth has everything to do with who we are, inside and out.  It is tied to our faith – who we believe in, who or what we worship, and how we define ultimate reality.  When fathers gather with their sons to discuss these spiritual topics in small groups, boys learn what it means to become real men.  The process includes a healthy examination of what our faith is really all about.

FAST leaders have experienced a model for father-son relationships that blows away our contemporary drop-off approach to parenting adolescents and teens.

The organizational concept is based upon years of biblical studies and a decade of real-life experiences that began in the late 90’s with an attempt to answer two questions:

  1. If dads gather on a regular basis (once or twice a month) with their son and other dads and sons to talk about faith together, especially starting in the 6th grade and continuing through high school, will their sons remain close to them and the church community?

  2. And most importantly, will these young men continue to seek the God of the bible during their college years and beyond?

The short answer is YES, but many lessons have been learned in the formation and ongoing activity of Fathers and Sons Together (FAST) groups.  We want to share our knowledge and experience with you.

The principals and associates of FAST have learned how fathers can get involved with their sons in the context of intergenerational groups that focus on spiritual growth.  This website presents a FAST group start-up guide, and lesson plans that provide a wealth of information on what to talk about in these groups.  Our experience with many such groups has shown that the format and content of these faith talks is of vital importance.

Additional insights are provided in the book “Fathers and Sons Together– Exploring Life's Most Important Relationships” by John Kain.
